Fitting Main Bearings

- Check main bearing surfaces for wear and damage. If replacing original bearings, and crankshaft is to standard specification, use 11-digit code number stamped on cylinder block and crankshaft. See Fig 1 for identification codes. To determine which bearing to use, read first 2 numbers after first asterisk on cylinder block.
- Next, read first 2 numbers after first asterisk on crankshaft. Using selective fit main bearing grade chart and code letters from cylinder block and crankshaft, find correct selective fit main bearing for No. 1 main journal. See Fig 2. Use second 2 numbers after first asterisk on cylinder block and crankshaft to determine No. 2 main journal.
- Use first 2 numbers after second asterisk on cylinder block and crankshaft to determine No. 3 main journal. Use last 2 numbers in cylinder block and crankshaft codes to determine No. 4 main journal. Move across and down appropriate row and column to select bearing grade. If crankshaft journals are worn or damaged, replace crankshaft.
