Pinpoint Test A: Control Solenoids

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Ford Pickup, 2007 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2007 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2007 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Refer to the Transmission Vehicle Harness Connector illustration preceding these pinpoint tests.
NOTE: Refer to the Internal Harness Connector illustration preceding these pinpoint tests.
NOTE: Read and record all DTCs. All transmission range (TR) Sensor, PCA (line pressure solenoid) and vehicle speed sensor (VSS) DTCs must be repaired before entering Output State Control (OSC) - Service Bay Mode.
NOTE: Use the PID Chart for available diagnostic PIDs. Refer to Output State Control (OSC) Mode  in this article.
  1. A1 ELECTRONIC DIAGNOSTICS
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Select PARK.
    • Check to make sure the transmission harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in connector and in good condition before proceeding.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: TCM Module
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Active Command Modes
    • Select TCM Module, then select Active Command Diagnostic Mode.
    • Monitor the appropriate PID for the solenoid SSPC-x or TCC being tested, refer to the PID chart in Output State Control (OSC) Mode .
    • Can the PIDs be monitored or solenoids be commanded?
    1. YES  : REMAIN in Active Command Diagnostic Mode. Go to  A2 .
    2. NO  : REPEAT procedure to enter Active Command Diagnostic Mode. If the vehicle did not enter Active Command Diagnostic Mode, REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article for diagnosis of the powertrain control module (PCM).
  2. A2 SOLENOID COMMAND TEST
    • Monitor the appropriate commanded current PID(s) for the solenoid being tested.
    • Select the appropriate solenoid that is to be tested, SSx_AMP or TCC_AMP.
    • Select value: 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 or 1.0 amp.
    • Press "SEND".
    • Select another value: 0 - 1.0 amp.
    • Press "SEND".
    • Cancel and return to normal operation.
    • Do the monitored current readings change and match the command?
    1. YES  : CLEAR DTCs. Road test. If symptom persists, go to Diagnosis By Symptom .
    2. NO  : Go to  A3.
  3. A3 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE
    • Disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector from the transmission bulkhead connector.
    • Inspect the harness connector for damaged pins.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the appropriate power pins on the harness side.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  A4.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST for normal operation.
  4. A4 ELECTRICAL SIGNAL CHECK
    • Disconnect the vehicle wire harness connector from the PCM.
    • Carry out a continuity check between the appropriate transmission connector signal pin and the PCM connector signal pin on the vehicle harness side.
    • Check the appropriate signal wire for shorts to ground.
    • Are there shorts or opens in the vehicle wire harness signal lead?
    1. YES  : REPAIR an open or short in the harness.
    2. NO  : Go to  A5.
  5. A5 CHECK THE INTERNAL HARNESS
    • Drain the transmission fluid.
    • Remove the transmission fluid pan.
    • Disconnect: Affected Solenoid
    • Measure the resistance between pins 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 and 12 transmission bulkhead side and pin 2 at each associated solenoid connector.
    • Measure the resistance between pins 7, 20 and 24 transmission bulkhead side and pin 1 at each associated solenoid connector.
    • Are the resistances less than 0.5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  A6.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new harness. Go to  A7.
  6. A6 CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Measure the resistance between pins 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10 and 12 harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  A7.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new harness.
  7. A7 CHECK THE SOLENOID RESISTANCE AT THE SOLENOID
    • Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2 at each solenoid.
    • Is the resistance between   4.1-4.7 ohms   ?
    1. YES  : Go to  A8.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new solenoid if not within specification. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  8. A8 CHECK THE SOLENOID FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2 at each solenoid and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new PCM. If the condition persists, REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom  in this article for diagnosis of pressure concerns. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new solenoid.
