Pinpoint Test D: Unintended Abs Activation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lincoln Mark LT and 2007 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multi-meter probes.
  1. D1 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Using the scan tool, retrieve the ABS module DTCs.
    • Are DTCs C1145, C1155 or C1230 present? 
    1. YES  : Go to Pinpoint Test C .
    2. NO  : For DTC C1222  , go to  D7.

      For DTC C1296 or C1297  , if the active wheel speed sensor tool is available, go to  D2. If the active wheel speed sensor tool is not available, go to  D5.

      For DTC C1237  , go to  D6.

      For all other DTCs  , go to the ABS Module DTC Chart.

      If no DTCs are present  , go to  D8.

  2. D2 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OUTPUT USING THE SPECIAL TOOL 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor
    • Connect the special tool to the wheel speed sensor connectors.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Select the correct system polarity on the special tool and turn the special tool power switch to the ON position.
    • Is the module output LED illuminated? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D4.
    2. NO  : Go to  D3.
  3. D3 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN 
    NOTE: Both circuits must be checked for each DTC.
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135
    • For DTC C1296  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C135-6, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side.
      • ABS module C135-18, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160-2, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side.
    • For DTC C1297  , measure the resistance between:
      • ABS module C135-34, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side.
      • ABS module C135-21, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150-2, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D9.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the affected circuit(s). CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  4. D4 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT WITH THE SPECIAL TOOL 
    • Raise the suspect wheel until it can spin freely. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
    • While monitoring the special tool, slowly spin the suspect wheel.
    • Do the sensor output LEDs illuminate and flash and is the current overload LED not illuminated?  
    1. YES  : INSPECT the wheel speed sensor tone ring for damage and looseness. INSTALL new components as necessary. If the tone ring is OK, the concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
    2. NO  : If the current level LED is not illuminated and the sensor output LEDs do not illuminate or if the current level LED is illuminated red, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)  or Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Four Wheel Drive (4WD)  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

      If the current level LED is not illuminated and the sensor output LEDs illuminate green but do not flash, INSPECT the wheel speed sensor tone ring and INSTALL new if necessary. If the tone ring is OK, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)  or Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Four Wheel Drive (4WD)  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. D5 CHECK THE FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT 
    • Disconnect: Wheel Speed Sensor C150 (LF) or C160 (RF)
    • For DTC C1296  :
      • connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between LF wheel speed sensor C150 -2, circuit 521 (TN/OG), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150 pin-2, component side.
      • connect the automotive meter between LF wheel speed sensor C150-1, circuit 522 (TN/BK), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor C150 pin-1, component side.

    • For DTC C1297  :
      • connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between RF wheel speed sensor C160 -2, circuit 514 (YE/RD), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160 pin-2, component side.
      • connect the automotive meter between RF wheel speed sensor C160-1, circuit 516 (YE/BK), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor C160 pin-1, component side.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the current while rotating the wheel slightly.
    • Does the automotive meter switch between the low state (5 to 8 mA) and the high state (11 to 18 mA)? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D8.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)  or Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Four Wheel Drive (4WD)  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  6. D6 CHECK THE REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT 
    • Disconnect: Rear Wheel Speed Sensor C455
    • For DTC C1237  :
      • connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between rear wheel speed sensor C455 -1, circuit 518 (LG/RD), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor C455 pin-1, component side.
      • connect the automotive meter between rear wheel speed sensor C455-2, circuit 519 (LG/BK), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor C455 pin-2, component side.

    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the current while rotating the wheel slightly.
    • Does the automotive meter switch between the low state (5 to 8 mA) and the high state (11 to 18 mA)? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D8.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  7. D7 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE CONFIGURATION 
    • Verify that the tires are the correct size for the vehicle as indicated on the vehicle certification label.
    • Configure the ABS module. Verify that the vehicle data matches the vehicle options. Refer to Programmable Module Installation in MODULE CONFIGURATION article.
    • Clear the DTCs. Carry out the self-test.
    • Is DTC 1222 still present? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D9.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a mis-configured ABS module.
  8. D8 MONITOR THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PIDs 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DataLogger ABS Module
    • Drive the vehicle at various speeds above 10 km/h (6 mph) while monitoring the following PIDs:
      • Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor (LF_WSPD)
      • Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor (RF_WSPD)
      • Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor (LR_WSPD)
      • Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor (RR_WSPD)
    • Do all of the PIDs match? 
    1. YES  : Go to  D9.
    2. NO  : INSPECT the suspect wheel speed sensor tone ring. If OK, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor in question. REFER to Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) , Wheel Speed Sensor - Front, Four Wheel Drive (4WD)  or Wheel Speed Sensor - Rear  in this article. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
  9. D9 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135
    • Check the connector for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
      • spread terminals.
    • Connect: ABS Module C135
    • Make sure the connector seats correctly, then operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSPECT the wheel speed sensor tone ring for damage and looseness. INSTALL new components as necessary. If the tone ring is OK, INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module  in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
