Pinpoint Test C: The Engine Does Not Crank And The Relay Does Not Click (Late Build Vehicles)

- C1 CHECK THE BATTERY
- Check the battery condition and charge. Refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article.
- Is the battery OK?
- YES : Go to C2.
- NO : CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C2 CHECK FOR PATS DTCs
- Check for PATS DTCs.
- Were any PATS DTCs retrieved?
NOTE: PATS diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are the only DTCs of concern in this step. Only repair retrieved non-PATS DTCs if a customer concern is reported.- YES : REFER to ANTI-THEFT article to diagnose the PATS DTCs.
- NO : Go to C3.
- C3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1522 (DG) FOR VOLTAGE AT THE OTIS DIODE
- Disconnect: OTIS Diode
- Key in START position.
- For vehicles without daytime running lamps, measure the voltage between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and ground with the ignition switch in the START position.
- For vehicles with daytime running lamps, measure the voltage between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and ground with the ignition switch in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- C4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1050 (LG/VT) FOR VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250
- Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-4, circuit 1050 (LG/VT) and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to C5.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1050 (LG/VT). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C5 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH
- Carry out the Ignition Switch Component Test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
- Did the ignition switch pass the component test?
- YES : REPAIR circuit 1522 (DG) or 32 (RD/LB) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C6 CHECK CIRCUIT 1522 (DG) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM C175B
- For vehicles without daytime running lamps, measure the resistance between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and PCM C175B-7, circuit 1522 (DG), harness side.
- For vehicles with daytime running lamps, measure the resistance between auxiliary relay box 1 OTIS diode cell, circuit 1522 (DG) and PCM C175B-7, circuit 1522 (DG), harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to C7.
- NO : REPAIR the circuit 1522 (DG). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C7 CHECK ONE-TOUCH INTEGRATED START (OTIS) DIODE
- Carry out an OTIS Diode Test.
- Is the OTIS diode open or shorted?
- YES : INSTALL a new OTIS diode. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : Go to C8.
- C8 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR VOLTAGE
- Disconnect: Starter Motor Relay
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between CJB starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and ground while holding the key in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- C9 CHECK CIRCUIT 325 (DB/OG) FOR VOLTAGE AT THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Digital TR Sensor C167
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between digital TR sensor C167-10, circuit 325 (DB/OG) and ground while holding the key in the START position.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : Go to C10.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 325 (DB/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C10 CHECK CIRCUIT 1093 (TN/RD) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between digital TR sensor C167-12, circuit 1093 (TN/RD) and CJB starter motor relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- YES : Go to C11.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1093 (TN/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C11 CHECK THE DIGITAL TR SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
- Carry out the Digital TR Sensor Adjustment. Refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E article.
- Is the digital TR sensor adjusted correctly?
- YES : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : ADJUST the digital TR sensor as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C12 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
- Key in START position.
- Measure the voltage between CJB starter motor relay pin 85, circuit 1785 (LG/VT) and pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- YES : INSTALL a new starter motor relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
- NO : Go to C13.
- C13 CHECK PCM CIRCUIT 325 (DB/OG) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM C175B
- Measure the resistance between PCM C175B-43, circuit 325 (DB/OG), harness side and CJB starter relay pin 86, circuit 1093 (TN/RD).
- Is the resistance reading 5 ohms or less?
- YES : Go to C14.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 325 (DB/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C14 CHECK CIRCUIT 1785 (LG/VT) FOR AN OPEN
- Measure the resistance between the CJB starter motor relay connector pin 85, circuit 1785 (LG/VT) and PCM C175B-34, circuit 1785 (LG/VT).
- Is the resistance reading 5 ohms or less?
- YES : DIAGNOSE the PCM. REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE ENGINES article.
- NO : REPAIR circuit 1785 (LG/VT) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
