Crankshaft Rear Seal with Retainer Plate: Removal

- Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E article.
- Remove the 6 flexplate bolts and the flexplate.
- Remove the engine rear cover plate.
- Remove the oil pan. For additional information, refer to Oil Pan in this article.
- Using the special tools, remove and discard the crankshaft oil slinger.
- Using the special tools, remove and discard the crankshaft rear seal.
- Remove the 6 crankshaft rear seal retainer plate bolts and the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate.
- Clean and inspect the mating surface.
CAUTION:
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
NOTE:
Clean the sealing surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
