Removal And Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lincoln Mark LT and 2007 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If equipped, remove the rear stabilizer bar. For additional information, refer to REAR SUSPENSION article.
  2. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVESHAFT article.
  3. Remove the axle shafts. For additional information, refer to Axle Shaft  in this article.
  4. Disconnect the rear brake anti-lock sensor electrical connector from the sensor.
    • Separate the wiring harness from the clips and position the harness aside.
    NOTE: If the vent hose is disconnected from the vehicle body, a new retainer must be installed.

  5. Remove the vent hose.

  7. Remove the brake hose junction block bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).

  9. Separate the parking brake cable bracket from the axle housing.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  11. Remove the brake line bracket bolt, then remove the brake line from the brake line retaining clips.
    • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

  13. Support the axle with a suitable transmission jack.

  15. Remove the 2 lower shock absorber nuts and 2 bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft).

  17. Remove the rear axle U-bolt assembly.
    • Remove the 4 spring plate nuts.
    • Remove the 2 spring plate U-bolts.
    • Remove the spring plate.
    • Repeat the procedure for the other side.
    • To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

  19. Lower the axle housing from the vehicle.
  20. To install the original assembly, reverse the removal procedure.
  21. To install a factory replacement axle assembly, remove the new disc brake calipers and the vent plug. Follow the removal procedure in reverse.
  22. Check the rear axle fluid level after installation.
