Pinpoint Test A: The Ignition Switch Is Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Montego, 2006 Ford Freestyle, and 2006 Ford Five Hundred. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
  1. A1 CHECK CIRCUIT 1715 (RD) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250.
    • Measure the voltage between ignition switch C250-4, circuit 1715 (RD), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes:  INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to IGNITION SWITCH  . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No:  GO to  A2.

  2. A2 CHECK CIRCUIT 1715 (RD) FOR AN OPEN
    • Disconnect: BJB fuse 34 (30A).
    • Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-4, circuit 1715 (RD), harness side and BJB fuse 33 (30A), circuit 1715 (RD), output side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

    Yes:  GO to  A3.

No:  VERIFY BJB fuse 33 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 1715 (RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.

  3. A3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1715 (RD) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    • Disconnect: BJB fuse 33 (30A).
    • Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-4, circuit 1715 (RD), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

Yes:  INSTALL a new BJB. REFER to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . TEST the system for normal operation.

No:  REPAIR circuit 1715 (RD) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
