Removal and Installation

- Hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position using a suitable holding device.
- Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.
- Remove the nuts and disconnect the tie-rod ends (3A130). Discard the nuts.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Loosen the bolt.
- Remove the pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft (3A525).
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the power steering hose bracket.
- Disconnect the power steering hoses. Plug the hose ends and the gear.
- Remove the nuts, bolts and the power steering gear (3504). Discard the nuts.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Using the appropriate special tool, install new O-rings on the power steering pressure and return hose fittings.
- Fill, purge and leak check the system. For additional information, see GENERAL PROCEDURES .
- Check wheel alignment. Adjust as necessary. For additional information, see SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES .
NOTE:
To remove the nuts, first loosen the nut, and then use the hex holding feature to prevent the tie-rod end ball joint from turning.
CAUTION:
Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the wheel has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, see CLOCKSPRING CENTERING
