Catalytic Converter - Gasoline Engines: Installation

NOTE: Do not tighten any fasteners until all components are aligned.
    NOTE: Apply anti-seize to the threads of the catalyst monitor sensor before installation.
  1. If removed, install the catalyst monitor sensor.
    • Tighten to 46 Nm (34 lb-ft).
  2. Clean the mating surface of the exhaust Y-pipe flange-to-catalytic converter flange gasket.
  3. Position the catalytic converter and connect the rubber isolator.
  4. If equipped, connect the exhaust intermediate pipe isolator and the front muffler isolator.
  5. Install a new exhaust Y-pipe flange gasket, and install loosely new exhaust Y-pipe flange nuts.

  6. NOTE: Using an abrasive pad, clean the exhaust coupling surface area of any surface rust.

  7. Place the new coupling on the catalytic converter-to-muffler joint or, if equipped, catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe joint. Make sure the coupling is installed no more the 4 mm (0.15 in) from the back of the button on the end of the pipe.
  8. Align the exhaust system. For additional information refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM ALIGNMENT .
  9. Tighten the exhaust Y-pipe flange nuts.
    • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  10. Tighten the catalytic converter-to-muffler coupling or, if equipped, catalytic converter-to-exhaust intermediate pipe coupling.
    • Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
  11. If equipped, install the skid plate.
