Valve Springs: Removal

    RH valve springs 

  1. Remove the air cleaner and air cleaner inlet tube. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  2. Remove the RH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - RH .
  3. Remove the cooling fan shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  4. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to GENERATOR AND REGULATOR .
  5. Install the special tools.

  6. Remove the 4 exhaust manifold-to-exhaust Y-pipe nuts.

  7. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts or damage to the transmission mount can occur.

  8. Loosen the transmission mount-to-crossmember nuts.
  9. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing the engine support insulator nuts or damage to the engine support insulators can occur.
    NOTE: RH shown, LH similar.

  10. Remove the 3 RH engine support insulator nuts, and only loosen the 3 LH engine support insulator nuts.
  11. Using the special tools, raise the engine.

  12. LH valve springs 

  13. Remove the LH valve cover. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - LH .
  14. All valve springs 

  15. Remove the spark plug for the cylinder being serviced. For additional information, refer to ENGINE IGNITION - 5.4L AND 6.8L (3V) .
  16. Rotate the crankshaft until the piston for the valve being serviced is at the top of its stroke with the intake valve and the exhaust valves closed.
  17. CAUTION: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same positions. Mark the components for installation into their original locations.

  18. Using the special tool, compress the valve spring and remove the camshaft roller follower.
  19. Use compressed air in the cylinder being serviced to hold both valves in position.
    • Apply a minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) of compressed air into the cylinder.
  20. CAUTION: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the cylinder. If air pressure must be removed, support the valve prior to removal.
    CAUTION: If the components are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in the same positions. Mark the components for installation into their original locations.
    NOTE: If a valve drops into the cylinder, remove the cylinder head. For additional information, refer to CYLINDER HEAD .

  21. Using the special tool, compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring retainer keys.
  22. Remove the valve spring retainer and the valve spring.
  23. Inspect the valve spring. For additional information, refer to ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
