Driveshaft Universal Joint - Double Cardan: Disassembly

    CAUTION: Do not clamp the driveshaft in the jaws of a vise or a similar holding fixture.
  1. Place the driveshaft on a suitable workbench.
  2. Index-mark the double cardan yokes.

  3. Remove all of the snap rings.

  4. Clamp the special tool in a swivel base vise.

  5. CAUTION: Do not continue to tighten the special tool if the U-joint bottoms out in the yoke or damage will occur to the center bearing shield.
  6. Using the special tool, press the 2 bearing cups out of the opposite side of the driveshaft center yoke.
    • Alternate the pressure between the U-joints.

  7. Slide the universal joint spider toward the screw side of the special tool. Insert the half moon punch on the exposed spider leg.

  8. Using the special tool, press the 2 remaining bearing cups out of the opposite side of the driveshaft center yoke.

  9. Remove the bearing cups with gripping pliers.

  10. Remove remaining bearing cups and spiders, and on the one-piece rear driveshaft, remove the spring.
    • The centering ball on the driveshaft end yoke is not repairable. Discard the driveshaft if the centering ball is damaged.
