Wheel Knuckle: Removal

NOTE: LH shown, RH similar.

    All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. All wheel drive (AWD) vehicles 

    NOTE: Apply the brake to keep the half shaft from rotating.
  3. Remove and discard the front wheel hub nut.
  4. Drum brake vehicles 

  5. Remove the brake shoes. For additional information, refer to DRUM BRAKE .
  6. Remove the parking brake cable bracket-to-control arm bolt.

  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.
    • Remove the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.
  8. Disconnect the brake tube from the wheel cylinder and remove the brake tube bracket bolt.

  9. Disc brake vehicles 

  10. Remove the parking brake shoes. For additional information, refer to PARKING BRAKE & ACTUATION .
  11. AWD vehicles 

    CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the outer constant velocity (CV) joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components can result.

  12. Using the special tools, separate the outer CV joint from the wheel hub.
  13. All vehicles 

  14. Remove the anti-lock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor bolt and the 2 ABS wheel speed sensor wire bolts.
  15. Remove and position the wheel speed sensor and harness aside.
  16. Remove the coil spring. For additional information, refer to SPRING .
  17. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
  18. CAUTION: The joint surfaces must be clean.
    NOTE: Clean the general area of the joint to prevent debris from entering the joint. Clean using only mild liquids.
  19. Reference mark the notch on the cam nut adjustment cam.
  20. Remove and discard the wheel knuckle bolt.
  21. Remove and discard the cam nut.
  22. Remove the wheel knuckle.
