Inspection and Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Mercury Mariner and 2006 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: This section contains information that is specific to the Escape Hybrid brake system.
WARNING: The traction battery and the charging system contain high voltage components and wiring. High voltage insulated safety gloves and a face shield must be worn when carrying out any diagnostics on this vehicle. Failure to follow these instructions may result in severe personal injury or death.
NOTE: The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module is part of the hydraulic control unit (HCU). Do not separate the ABS module from the HCU for any reason.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  5. If the diagnostic tool does not power up, refer to the diagnostic tool manual .
  6. Carry out the data link diagnostic test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN or ISO circuits, all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK .
    • No response/not equipped for the ABS module, refer to VEHICLE DYNAMIC SYSTEMS .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and carry out self-test diagnostics for the ABS module.
  7. NOTE: Always retrieve the continuous DTCs after running the self-test.
  8. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX  to continue diagnosis.
  9. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM CHART  to continue diagnosis.
NOTE: Some DTCs can be caused by hydraulic leaks in the circuit. A thorough visual inspection must be carried out on the entire brake system before attempting to service any DTCs. Repair any leaks or base brake concerns before continuing to the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
