Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Installation

- Align clockspring to combination switch and press components together, engaging retaining tabs. Connect electrical connector to combination switch/clockspring assembly and install NEW cable tie. If installing NEW clockspring, remove locking mechanism pull ring. If installing existing clockspring, remove tape applied during removal procedure. If clockspring rotor has moved or if unsure of clockspring rotor position, center clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING
under ADJUSTMENTS. Maintain clockspring centered position.NOTE: Slight turning of clockspring is allowable during installation to properly align clockspring to steering column.
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. With flats on clockspring aligned with flats on steering column, slide clockspring onto steering column and install by firmly pushing down to engage retaining clips. Remove air bag simulator from lower clockspring harness connector and reconnect connectors. Connect steering column position sensor connector. Connect hands-free microphone, if equipped.
- Install upper steering column shroud. Install automatic temperature sensor to instrument cluster finish panel. Install instrument panel finish panel. Install steering column mounting nuts and tighten all nuts to specification. Install steering column. Connect Air Bag Simulator (418-F395/014-R1079) to upper clockspring connector (in place of air bag). Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at remaining deployable air bag system devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
