Charcoal Canister: Removal
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Rear subframe must be lowered to access EVAP canister assembly. Drain fuel tank. See FUEL TANK DRAINING under FUEL SYSTEMS. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies. Remove muffler and rear heat shield.
- Using different color paint markers, place index marks on differential companion flange, driveshaft flexible coupling and differential companion flange bolts, nuts, washers and system balance add-on nuts so driveshaft and differential may be realigned during installation. If equipped, remove balance nuts prior to removal of flex coupling nuts. Remove flex coupling bolts, nuts and washers. Support driveshaft at center and rear.
- Remove center bearing bracket bolts and shims. See Fig 1. Slide rear driveshaft to full forward position. Disconnect 2 anti-lock brake sensor harness connectors near differential. Disconnect 2 rear parking brake cables from rear caliper assemblies.
- Disconnect 2 parking brake cables from junction bracket located at rear of fuel tank. Disconnect left and right side brake lines. Disconnect brake line at junction block. Remove junction block bracket bolt and position brake line and bracket aside. Remove and discard 2 lower rear shock mount bolts. Paint or mark position of subframe to body for assembly reference.
- Loosen clamp and remove fuel filler hose from fuel tank. Support vehicle with jack stands at engine crossmember. Position lift table under rear subframe and remove rear subframe bolts. Ensure rear subframe assembly clears fuel filler tube and differential pinion stem during subframe removal. Lower rear subframe from vehicle.
- Disconnect all harness connectors under EVAP canister and bracket assembly. Disconnect EVAP hose. Remove 4 bolts retaining EVAP canister bracket assembly and remove from vehicle. See Fig 2. Disconnect hoses to EVAP canister. See Fig 3. Remove rivet retaining EVAP canister and remove EVAP canister from bracket assembly.
CAUTION:
Differential companion flange bolts, nuts and washers must be removed as matched pairs and installed in original location. The system balance add-on nuts must be installed in original location. Disconnect flexible coupling only from differential companion flange.
NOTE:
Shims between center bearing mounting bracket and body must be installed in original location.
CAUTION:
Remove any residual fuel from fuel filler hose prior to removal to avoid spillage.
WARNING:
Ensure rear subframe is secured to lift table before lowering rear subframe assembly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
