Axle Shafts: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln LS, 2001 Lincoln LS, and 2000 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Do not begin this procedure unless: a new rear axle wheel hub nut is available, a new axle circlip is available and you have read axle shaft handling procedures. See SERVICE PRECAUTION  .
NOTE: This procedure applies to both the left and right axle shafts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove and DISCARD the rear axle wheel hub nut. See Fig 1 .

  4. Remove the rear brake anti-lock sensor bolt and sensor from rear hub.
  5. Remove the rear brake disc.
    • For 2000-01 vehicles, see REAR ROTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in DISC - LS article in BRAKES.
    • For 2002 vehicles, see REAR ROTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in DISC article in BRAKES.
  6. Remove and discard the lower suspension arm-to-knuckle nut and bolt. See Fig 2 .

  7. Using Hub Remover/Replacer 204-069 (T81P-1104-C), Metric Hub Remover Adapter 205-237 (T86P-1104-A1), and Metric Hub Remover Adapters 204-085 (T83P-1104-BH), press the outboard CV joint until it is loose in the hub. See Fig 3 .

  8. CAUTION: Do not over-angulate the outboard CV joint or damage the boot.

  9. While raising the knuckle, remove the CV joint from the hub. See Fig 4 .
  10. Position the knuckle to gain clear access for the axle shaft removal. See Fig 5 .

  11. CAUTION: The crown of the tool forks must face away from the axle housing. Position the Axle Shaft Removal Tool (205-475) correctly between the CV joint and the axle housing so as not to damage the differential seal.

  12. Using the Axle Shaft Removal Tool, exert enough pressure to overcome the axle circlip and separate the CV joint from the differential side gear. See Fig 6 .
  13. CAUTION: Do not damage the differential seal.

  14. Carefully remove the axle shaft with both hands. See Fig 7 .
  15. Install the Differential Plug 205-294 (T89P-4850-B). See Fig 8 .
