2.0L Engine (VIN 3)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 12 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Sable, 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, 2001 Mercury Cougar, 2001 Lincoln Town Car, and 2001 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Selective sized tappets are used to adjust valve clearance.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Loosen, but DO NOT remove upper timing belt cover. Disconnect spark plug wires from spark plugs by slightly twisting and pulling off in a straight direction from spark plug boot. DO NOT pull from spark plug wire. Detach crankcase ventilation hose. Remove 10 valve cover bolts by loosening diagonally, starting with bolts located on outside edge of valve cover, working inward.CAUTION: Severe engine damage may occur if engine is rotated in counterclockwise direction.
- Place No. 1 cylinder at TDC, on compression stroke, by rotating engine crankshaft clockwise. Using feeler gauge, measure and record cylinder No. 1 valve clearance. See Fig 1 . Rotate crankshaft clockwise 180 degrees. Using feeler gauge, measure and record cylinder No. 3 valve clearance. Repeat this procedure, following the firing order to measure and record valve clearance for cylinders No. 4 and 2.
- Ensure clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION (2.0L - VIN 3)
table. If clearance is not within specification, go to next step.VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATION (2.0L - VIN 3) (1)
Application In. (mm) Intake .004-.007 (0.11-0.18) Exhaust .011-.013 (0.27-0.34) (1) Clearance is checked with engine cold. - Remove camshafts from engine. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Remove tappet and read thickness from back side. Use the following formula to select proper intake tappet height: tappet thickness required = thickness of currently installed tappet + measured valve clearance - 0.15 mm. Use the following formula to select proper exhaust tappet height: tappet thickness required = thickness of currently installed tappet + measured valve clearance - 0.30 mm. Attempt to set valve clearances to middle of range. Select proper tappet and mark for location during installation.
- Install correct tappet. Rotate engine to set piston in bore on cylinder No. 1 to approximately 1" (25 mm) before TDC. Install camshafts and camshaft timing belts. Measure new valve clearances. Rotate crankshaft clockwise and repeat procedure for all valves as necessary. If any clearances are incorrect, repeat step 2 .
- Install valve cover and first tighten bolts to 17 INCH lbs. (2 N.m) then to 62 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. See appropriate article in ENGINES.
