Inspection and Verification: Notes

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
    VISUAL INSPECTION TABLE

    Mechanical Electrical
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Brake fluid level
    • Engine oil level
    • Engine coolant level
    • Fuel tank
    • Fuel evaporative system
    • Tire pressure
    • Tire size
    • Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse(s):
      • 26 (10A)
      • 29 (5A)
    • Wiring, terminals or connectors
    • Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC  )
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
  5. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  6. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove-out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM.
  7. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM:
  8. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
  9. Carry out the network test.
  10. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the IPC  , SJB  , PCM, ABS module and Restraints Control Module (RCM).
  11. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC TABLE . For all other DTCs, refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Table in MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES -- FUSION, MILAN & MKZ article.
  12. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to SYMPTOM TABLE - INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) , GO to SYMPTOM TABLE - INFORMATION AND MESSAGE CENTER , or GO to SYMPTOM TABLE - WARNING CHIMES .
