Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Mercury Milan, 2010 Lincoln MKZ, and 2010 Ford Fusion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Draining .
  3. Disconnect the positive battery cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the 2 bolts, thermostat housing cover, O-ring seal and thermostat.
    • To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
    NOTE: Early build vehicle (built before July 6, 2009) cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine Coolant. Late build vehicle (built on or after July 6, 2009) cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant. Mixing coolant types degrades the corrosion protection of the coolant. Do not mix coolant types. Failure to follow these instructions may result in engine or cooling system damage.
    NOTE: To install, lubricate the thermostat housing O-ring seal with clean engine coolant.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Clean and inspect the O-ring seal. Install a new seal if necessary.
  7. Fill and bleed the cooling system. For additional information, refer to COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
