All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and the outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING - 3.0L (4V) .
  3. Remove the battery and battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever.

  5. Remove the 2 nuts and position the selector lever cable and bracket aside.

  6. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers from the main control cover stud bolts.

  7. Disconnect the wiring harness retainer from the transmission fluid filler tube.

  8. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM .
  9. Remove the 3 upper torque converter housing bolts.

  10. Remove the EGR valve and tube. For additional information, refer to ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL - 3.0L (4V) .
  11. Remove the 2 bolts and the EGR valve bracket.

  12. Remove the subframe. For additional information, refer to UNI-BODY, SUBFRAME AND MOUNTING SYSTEM .
  13. NOTE: Front Wheel Drive (FWD) shown in illustration, All-Wheel Drive (AWD) similar.

    Remove the 2 bolts from the engine roll restrictor bracket.

  14. NOTE: If transaxle disassembly or installation of a new transaxle is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.

    Remove the drain plug and allow the transmission fluid to drain.

  15. Install the transmission fluid drain plug.
    • Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

  16. Remove the LH halfshaft. For additional information, refer to FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS .

    Front Wheel Drive (FWD) vehicles 

  17. Remove the intermediate shaft. For additional information, refer to FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS .
  18. Disconnect the RH O2 sensor electrical connector.

  19. Remove the 5 bolts and the RH exhaust manifold heat shield.

    All-Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles 

  20. Remove the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). For additional information, refer to POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU) .

    All vehicles 

  21. NOTE: When installing the Engine Lifting Bracket Set, it will be easier to loosely install the upper bolt first, then install the lower bolt.

    Install the lower half of the Engine Lifting Bracket Set.

  22. Install the upper half of the Engine Lifting Bracket Set.

  23. Remove the cooling fan motor and shroud. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  24. Install the Engine Lifting Bracket and Universal Adapter Bracket "L" hook on the LH side of the engine.

  25. Install the Engine Support Bar to support the engine.

  26. Remove the transaxle support insulator through bolt and lower the transaxle 19 mm (0.748 in).

  27. Remove the 3 nuts, the bolt and remove the transaxle support insulator bracket.

  28. Remove the inspection cover.

  29. Remove and discard the 4 torque converter nuts.

  30. Disconnect the transaxle main electrical connector.

  31. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.

  32. Remove the transmission fluid cooler tube secondary latches.

  33. Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes.

  34. Support the transaxle with a suitable transmission jack.
  35. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and the stud from the front of the torque converter housing.

  36. Remove the 2 back torque converter housing bolts and remove the transaxle.

  37. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.

  38. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube nut.

  39. Remove the transaxle vent tube from the transaxle case and remove the transmission fluid filler tube.

  40. Open the transmission fluid cooler tube retainers.

  41. Remove the 2 secondary latches.

  42. Using the Transmission Cooler Line Disconnect Tool, disconnect and remove the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.

  43. Remove the 2 nuts and remove the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket.

  44. If installing a new transaxle, the transmission fluid cooler will need to be backflushed and cleaned. Carry out transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. For additional information, refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER BACKFLUSHING AND CLEANING .
