Pinpoint Test E: The Steering Wheel Switch(Es) Is Inoperative

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. E1 CHECK CIRCUIT 19 (LB/RD) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • Disconnect: Clockspring C218b
    • Remove the central junction box (CJB) fuse 36 (5A).

    • Measure the resistance between clockspring C218b-5, circuit 19 (LB/RD), harness side and the CJB fuse 36 (5A) output side.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL the CJB fuse 36 (5A). Go to  E2.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. INSTALL the CJB fuse 36 (5A). REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. E2 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure the resistance between clockspring C218b-4, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  E3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. REPOWER the SRS. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. E3 CHECK THE CLOCKSPRING FOR AN OPEN 
    • Remove the driver air bag module. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
    • Disconnect the upper clockspring.

    • Measure the resistance between the clockspring C218b-5, component side and the upper clockspring connector pin 6, component side.

    • Measure the resistance between the clockspring C218b-4, component side and the upper clockspring connector pin 3, component side.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new speed control switch. REFER to SPEED CONTROL article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new clockspring. REFER to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM article. TEST the system for normal operation.
