5 4204 Differential carrier assembly
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist or raise the rear end of the vehicle with a jack. Install safety stands under the frame rails and lower the jack or hoist enough to allow the rear axle to drop into the rebound position for working clearance. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING article.
  2. Remove the axle shafts. For additional information, refer to WHEEL HUBS AND BEARINGS - FULL FLOATING AXLE - DANA article.
  3. Remove the differential housing cover. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover .
  4. Index-mark the position of the differential bearing caps, as arrows may not be visible. The differential bearing caps must be installed in their original locations and positions.

  6. Remove the 4 bolts and the 2 bearing caps.
  7. Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture and Differential Carrier Spreader, spread the differential housing to the specification. Remove Dial Indicator after spreading the housing.

  9. Remove the differential assembly with the 2 bearing cups.

  11. Remove the 2 outboard spacers.
    • Tag the spacers LH and RH for installation location.

  13. Assemble the 2 differential bearing cups to the 2 differential bearings.
  14. Install the 2 outboard spacers in their original positions.

  16. Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture and Differential Carrier Spreader, spread the differential housing to the specification.

  18. Install the 2 bearing caps and 4 bearing cap bolts, aligning the letters with those on the differential housing.
    • Tighten to 108 Nm (80 lb-ft).

  20. Using the Dial Indicator Gauge with Holding Fixture and Clutch Housing Gauge, measure the differential ring gear and pinion backlash at 3 equally spaced points.

  22. Carry out the Tooth Contact Pattern Check to verify the final pinion position is correct. For additional information, refer to DRIVELINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION article.
  23. Install the axle shafts. For additional information, refer to WHEEL HUBS AND BEARINGS - FULL FLOATING AXLE - DANA article.
  24. Install the differential housing cover. For additional information, refer to Differential Housing Cover .
  25. Fill the axle with the specified type and amount of lubricant. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS .
