Pinpoint Test A: The Wipers Are Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Ford RV Cutaway, 2008 Ford Econoline, 2008 Ford E450 Super Duty, and 2008 Ford Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. A1 CHECK CIRCUITS 65 (DG) AND 950 (WH/BK) FOR VOLTAGE
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 1: Checking Circuits 65 (DG) & 950 (WH/BK) For Voltage

    • Measure the voltage between windshield wiper motor C125-8, circuit 65 (DG), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper motor C125-5, circuit 950 (WH/BK), harness side and ground.
    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  A2.
    2. NO  : VERIFY CJB fuse 9 (5A) and circuit breaker 44 (30A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. A2 CHECK CIRCUITS 57 (BK) AND 938 (BK/LG) FOR OPENS
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Fig 2: Checking Circuits 57 (BK) & 938 (BK/LG) For Opens

    • Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-6, circuit 57 (BK), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper motor C125-3, circuit 938 (BK/LG), harness side and ground.
    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  A3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202C
    • Carry out the Multifunction Switch Component Test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING.
    • Did the multifunction switch pass the component test?
    1. YES  : Go to  A4.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  4. A4 CHECK CIRCUIT 938 (BK/LG) FOR AN OPEN
Fig 3: Checking Circuit 938 (BK/LG) For An Open
      GF0011475Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between multifunction switch C202C-5, circuit 938 (BK/LG), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  A5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. A5 CHECK FOR SHORTS IN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR HARNESS
    • Measure the resistance at the windshield wiper motor electrical connector between the circuits shown in the table.
Windshield Wiper Motor C125 Windshield Wiper Motor C125
      Pin 10, circuit 56 (DB/OG) Pin 11, circuit 58 (WH)
        Pin 1, circuit 61 (YE/RD)
        Pin 9, circuit 63 (RD)
      Pin 11, circuit 58 (WH) Pin 1, circuit 61 (YE/RD)
        Pin 9, circuit 63 (RD)
      Pin 1, circuit 61 (YE/RD) Pin 9, circuit 63 (RD)
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms for all measurements?
    1. YES  : Go to  A6.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. A6 CHECK FOR CORRECT WIPER MOTOR OPERATION
    • Disconnect all wiper motor connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
    • Connect all wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to Wiper Motor .
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
