Pinpoint Test M: The Turn Signal Lamps Are Inoperative

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Mercury Mariner and 2007 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
  1. M1 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C2080
    • Carry out the multifunction switch component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING article.
    • Is the multifunction switch OK?
    1. YES  : Go to  M2.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. M2 CHECK CIRCUIT 570 (BK/WH) FOR AN OPEN
Fig 1: Checking Circuit For Open

    • Measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C2080-7, circuit 570 (BK/WH), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  M3.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. M3 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
    • Key in ON position.
    • Fig 2: Checking Circuit For Voltage
      GF0025978Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the voltage between the multifunction switch C2080-8, circuit 1690 (LB/RD) (LH turn signal), harness side and ground; or between the multifunction switch C2080-6, circuit 1691 (LG/OG) (RH turn signal), harness side and ground.
    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
    1. YES  : Go to  M5.
    2. NO  : Go to  M4.
  4. M4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1690 (LB/RD) (LH TURN SIGNAL) OR 1691 (LG/OG) (RH TURN SIGNAL) FOR AN OPEN
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280e
    • Fig 3: Checking Circuits For Open
      GF0025979Courtesy of FORD MOTOR CO.
    • Measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C2080-8, circuit 1690 (LB/RD), harness side and the SJB C2280e-9, circuit 1690 (LB/RD), harness side (LH turn lamps); or between the multifunction switch C2080-6, circuit 1691 (LG/OG), harness side and the SJB C2280e-32, circuit 1691 (LG/OG), harness side (RH turn lamps).
    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
    1. YES  : Go to  M5.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. M5 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • damaged pins
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present?
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
