Pinpoint Test G: The Defrost System Will Not Shut Off Automatically

  1. G1 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST GRID WITH THE RELAY REMOVED 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Relay C1099
    • Key in ON position.
    • Check the rear window defrost grid with the relay removed.
    • Is the rear window defrost still ON? 
    1. YES  : Go to  G5.
    2. NO  : Go to  G2.
  2. G2 CHECK THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST RELAY 
    • Carry out the Rear Window Defrost Relay component test. Refer to COMPONENT TESTING article.
    • Did the rear window defrost relay pass the component test? 
    1. YES  : Go to  G3.
    2. NO  : INSTALL a new rear window defrost relay. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. G3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1010 (DB/OG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Switch C241

    • Measure the resistance between rear window defrost switch C241-2, circuit 1010 (DB/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new rear window defrost switch. RUN the on-demand self test (required to clear the DTCs). CORRECT any unresolved DTCs. CLEAR all DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  G4.
  4. G4 CHECK THE SJB FOR AN INTERNAL SHORT 
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280e

    • Measure the resistance between rear window defrost switch C241-2, circuit 1010 (DB/OG), harness side and ground.
    • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
    1. YES  : Go to  G7.
    2. NO  : REPAIR the circuit. RUN the on-demand self test (required to clear the DTCs). CORRECT any unresolved DTCs. CLEAR all DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
  5. G5 CHECK CIRCUIT 186 (BN/LB) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Rear Window Defrost Grid C402a
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280c
    • Key in ON position.

    • Measure the voltage between rear window defrost grid C402a-2, circuit 186 (BK), harness side and ground.
    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the circuit. RUN the on-demand self test (required to clear the DTCs). CORRECT any unresolved DTCs. CLEAR all DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  G6.
  6. G6 CHECK CIRCUIT 59 (DG/VT) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Measure the voltage between SJB C2280c-21, circuit 59 (DG/VT), harness side and ground.
    • Is any voltage present? 
    1. YES  : REPAIR the circuit. RUN the on-demand self test (required to clear the DTCs). CORRECT any unresolved DTCs. CLEAR all DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : Go to  G7.
  7. G7 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion.
      • pushed-out pins.
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    1. YES  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES article. TEST the system for normal operation.
    2. NO  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. RUN the on-demand self test (required to clear the DTCs). CORRECT any unresolved DTCs. CLEAR all DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
