Test E: Charge Warning Indicator Flickers Or Is Intermittent

  1. Inspect battery, battery junction box, central junction box and generator connectors for loose, corroded or damaged connections. Repair as necessary and check system operation. If all connections are okay, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Wiggle appropriate fuses and fusible links while observing charge warning indicator. If indicator does not flicker, go to next step. If indicator flickers, repair appropriate loose connection and check system operation.
  3. With generator connectors connected, backprobe generator 3-pin connector terminal "A" (Yellow/White wire) with a 20-amp fused jumper wire. Connect other end of jumper to battery positive terminal. Start engine and observe charge warning indicator. If indicator does not flicker, repair loose connections in circuit between battery and generator 3-pin connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check system operation. On 3.8L, if indicator flickers, go to next step. On 4.6L, if indicator flickers, replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Disconnect generator 1-pin connector. Inspect connector for looseness, corrosion or damage. If connector is okay, go to next step. If connector is not okay, repair as necessary and check system operation.
  5. Remove generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between generator terminal "A" and generator terminal "F". See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, install new generator and check system operation.
  6. Remove voltage regulator to expose generator slip rings. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between each slip ring and ground. If resistance between either slip ring and ground is greater than 1000 ohms, replace generator and check system operation. If resistance is 1000 ohms or less, replace voltage regulator and check system operation.
