Test C: Charge Warning Indicator On With Engine Running

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Ford Mustang and 1999 Ford Mustang. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect generator 3-pin connector. Observe charge warning indicator with ignition on, engine off. If indicator illuminates, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Check system operation. On 3.8L, if indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. On 4.6L, if indicator does not illuminate, replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check system operation.
  2. Inspect generator 1-pin and 3-pin connector terminals for looseness, corrosion or damage. Repair as necessary and check system operation. If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  3. Reconnect generator 3-pin connector and disconnect generator 1-pin connector (White/Black wire). Start engine and run at 2000 RPM. Measure voltage between generator 1-pin connector White/Black wire and ground. If voltage is greater than 5 volts, replace voltage regulator and check system operation. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If voltage is 5 volts or less, replace generator and check system operation. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
