Timing Chain: Inspection

  1. Timing chain deflection (stretch) can be checked for wear before removing front cover. Remove left valve cover. Loosen cylinder No. 5 exhaust rocker arm, and rotate to one side.
  2. Position dial indicator on end of push rod. Rotate crankshaft clockwise to position cylinder No. 1 at TDC. Ensure crankshaft damper timing mark aligns with TDC mark on timing degree indicator. Zero dial indicator.
  3. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise until movement is detected by dial indicator. Note crankshaft damper timing mark for number of degrees of travel from TDC. If reading exceeds 6 degrees, replace timing chain and gears.
