Hub Bearings: Removal
- Loosen wheel lug nuts. Remove hub nut retainer and washer. Discard nut. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assemblies. Remove brake caliper by loosening locating pins, rotating caliper off rotor from lower end, and lifting upward.
- DO NOT remove caliper pins from caliper assembly. Wire caliper aside. Pull rotor from hub. If rotor is difficult to remove, strike rotor sharply between studs using a rubber or plastic hammer. If excessive removal force is used, check rotor for lateral runout. Remove rotor splash shield.
- Disconnect lower control arm and tie rod from steering knuckle (leave strut attached). Loosen nuts at top of strut mount in engine compartment. Install Hub Remover/Installer (T81P-1104-C) assembly, and push CV joint out of hub assembly. See Fig 1. Support axle shaft and knuckle assembly aside using wire. Remove strut bolt.

- Slide knuckle assembly off strut. Remove wire, and place knuckle assembly on bench. Remove hub from knuckle using Front Hub Puller (D80L-1002-L) and Shaft Protector (D80L-625-1). See Fig 2. Ensure shaft protector clears bearing I.D. and is centered.
- Remove bearing snap ring from knuckle. Using hydraulic press, install appropriate bearing spacer (step side up) onto press face plate. See Fig 3. Put steering knuckle (outboard side up) onto spacer. Install appropriate bearing remover on bearing inner race, press out bearing and discard.
- Remove axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS . Place axle shaft in vise with protected jaws. Remove dust seal by uniformly tapping outer edge with hammer and blunt chisel. Discard dust seal.
