Diagnostic Aids
Perform this test when instructed during QUICK TEST or if directed by other test procedures. This test is used to diagnose the following:
- Wiring Harness Circuits (CPP, PNP & SIG RTN), See Fig 1-Fig 6
- Faulty Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Switch
- Faulty Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch
- Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
- 1) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P0704 & P1709: Check CPP Or PNP Switch Function
These DTCs indicate CPP or PNP voltage was high when it should have been low. Possible causes are:- CPP Or PNP Circuit Shorted To B+ Or VPWR
- Faulty CPP Or PNP Switch
- CPP SIGRTN Or PNP SIGRTN Circuit Open
- Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Ensure shift lever is in Neutral. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select CPP/PNP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Observe CPP/PNP PID while applying and releasing clutch pedal or move gearshift lever from Neutral, then into gear, and back to Neutral. If CPP/PNP PID value does not cycle ON and OFF, go to next step. If CPP/PNP PID value cycles ON and OFF, fault may be intermittent. Check PCM harness connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Program PCM. See FLASH VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION BLOCK PROCEDURE .
- 2) Check CPP Or PNP Switch Resistance
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Locate CPP switch near clutch pedal or PNP switch near transmission shift linkage. Inspect switch and bracket for damage and repair as necessary. Disconnect CPP or PNP switch connector. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between CPP or PNP switch terminals while applying clutch pedal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace CPP or PNP switch. - 3) Check CPP/PNP Circuit
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool. Disconnect PCM connector(s). Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Using a DVOM, measure resistance of CPP or PNP circuit between PCM harness connector and CPP or PNP switch harness connector. Also, measure resistance of SIG RTN circuit between PCM harness connector CPP or PNP switch harness connector (if applicable). See Figure or Figure, and Fig 1-Fig 6 . If both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance measurement is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate circuit. - 4) Check CPP Or PNP Circuit For Open In Harness
Using a DVOM, measure resistance between CPP and SIG RTN circuit terminals at PCM harness connector. Also, measure resistance of CPP circuit between chassis ground and PCM harness connector. If both resistance measurements are more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Program PCM. See FLASH VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION BLOCK PROCEDURE . If either resistance measurement is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short in CPP circuit. - 5) DTC P0704, P1705 & P1709: Check CPP/PNP Switch Function
These DTCs indicate CPP or PNP voltage was high when it should have been low. Possible causes are.- CPP Or PNP Circuit Shorted To B+ Or VPWR

- CPP SIGRTN Or PNP SIGRTN Circuit Open
- Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Ensure gearshift lever is in Neutral. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, select CPP/PNP PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Observe CPP/PNP PID while applying and releasing clutch pedal or move gearshift lever from Neutral, then into gear, and back to Neutral. If CPP/PNP PID value does not cycle ON and OFF for both switches, go to next step. If CPP/PNP PID value cycles ON and OFF for both switches, fault may be intermittent. Check PCM harness connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. If connector is okay, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Program PCM. See FLASH VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION BLOCK PROCEDURE .
- 6) Check CPP/PNP Switches
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Locate CPP switch near clutch pedal and PNP switch near transmission shift linkage. Inspect both switches and brackets for damage and repair if necessary. Disconnect CPP and PNP switch connectors. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Measure resistance between CPP switch terminals with clutch pedal depressed. Measure resistance between PNP switch terminals with shift lever in Neutral. If both resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, replace CPP or PNP switch. - 7) Check CPP/PNP Circuit For Open In Harness
Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Disconnect PCM connector(s). Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Using a DVOM, measure resistance of SIG RTN circuit between PCM harness connector and CPP or PNP switch harness connector. Also, measure resistance of CPP or PNP circuit between PCM harness connector and CPP or PNP switch harness connector. See Figure or Figure, and Fig 1-Fig 6 . If both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance measurement is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. - 8) Check CPP/PNP Circuit For Short To SIG RTN Or Chassis Ground In Harness
Using a DVOM, measure resistance between CPP/PNP and SIG RTN circuit terminals at PCM harness connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and CPP/PNP circuit terminals at PCM harness connector. If both resistance measurements are more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Program PCM. See FLASH VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION BLOCK PROCEDURE . If any resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short in appropriate circuit.
