Test B: DTC P0455: Major Leak Or No Flow Detected Or DTC P1443: Very Small Or No Purge Flow Detected In System: Focus

  1. Check For DTC P0455 Or P1443 -  If DTC P0455 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0455 is not present, go to step  3.
  2. Check For Gross EVAP System Leaks

    Check for presence of fuel cap, but do not tighten at this time. Ensure input port vacuum and EVAP return tube are connected to EVAP canister purge valve. Ensure canister vent solenoid is seated on EVAP canister. Check for damaged fuel tank or fuel filler pipe. Check EVAP hoses between intake manifold and the following points:
    • EVAP Canister Purge Valve
    • EVAP Canister
    • Fuel Vapor Vent Valve Assembly
    • Fuel Vapor Valve Tube Assembly

    If problem was found, repair or replace component as necessary and perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If no problems were found, go to next step.

  3. Check For EVAP System Leaks

    Disconnect and plug EVAP return tube at intake manifold. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system pressure stays above 1.99 kPa (8 In. H2O), go to next step. If system is not as specified, go to step  8.
  4. Check For Blockage At EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid Assembly

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Using Evaporative Emissions System Leak Tester (134-00056) or equivalent, pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Open canister vent solenoid. If pressure drops immediately, go to step  6. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to next step.
  5. Check For Blockage Between EVAP Canister Purge Valve & EVAP Canister

    Disconnect and plug EVAP canister purge outlet tube between EVAP canister purge valve and EVAP canister. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Remove plug from EVAP canister purge outlet tube. If pressure drops immediately, perform TEST D . If pressure does not drop immediately, replace EVAP canister purge outlet tube assembly and go to TEST A, step 4) .
  6. Check For Blockage Between EVAP Test Port & Fuel Tank

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Remove fuel filler cap. If pressure drops immediately, go to step  14. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to next step.
  7. Check For Blockage Between EVAP Canister Tube & Fuel Tank

    Connect EVAP Tester to fuel filler pipe. Disconnect and plug EVAP canister tube from fuel tank between EVAP canister purge valve and EVAP canister. Pressurize system to 6.47-6.97 kPa (26-28 In. H2O). Remove plug from EVAP canister tube. If pressure drops immediately, replace EVAP canister tube and go to step  14. If pressure does not drop immediately, go to TEST D .
  8. Check For Large Leak At Fuel Filler Cap

    Connect EVAP Tester to fuel filler pipe and install fuel cap. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Using ultrasonic leak detector, check fuel filler cap. If leak is detected, replace fuel filler cap and repeat step. When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If no leak is detected, go to next step.
  9. Check For Leak At EVAP Canister & Canister Vent Solenoid

    Plug canister vent hose assembly. Connect EVAP Tester to test port. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Using ultrasonic leak detector, check EVAP canister and canister vent solenoid. If leak is detected, repair or replace leaking component. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . When system passes, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If no leak is detected, go to next step.
  10. Check For Leak Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister

    Disconnect and plug EVAP canister tube from tube leading to fuel tank. Using scan tool, close canister vent solenoid. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE, FTP and VPID. Select ALL OFF mode. Press START button on scan tool to close canister vent solenoid. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Using ultrasonic leak detector, check EVAP canister tube. If leak is detected, repair or replace EVAP canister tube and go to next step. If no leak is detected, go to step  12.
  11. Check Repairs Between EVAP Test Port & EVAP Canister

    Complete evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, go to step  14. If system does not pass leak test, go to next step.
  12. Check For Leak Between Fuel Tank & EVAP Canister

    Transfer plug from EVAP canister side to fuel tank side of fitting. Connect EVAP Tester to fuel filler pipe. Pressurize system to 6.47-6.97 kPa (26-28 In. H2O). Using ultrasonic leak detector, check fuel filler pipe, fuel tank, fuel vapor vent valve, fuel vapor control valve, fuel vapor control valve tube, fuel tank pressure sensor and EVAP canister tube. If leak is detected, repair or replace component as necessary and go to next step. If no leak is detected, perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, go to step  14.
  13. Check Repairs Between Fuel Tank & EVAP Canister

    Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Complete evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, go to next step. If system does not pass leak test, go to step  12.
  14. Check Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Operation With Fuel Filler Cap Removed

    Ensure battery is fully charged. Remove fuel filler cap. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access PCM PID FTP V. If PCM PID FTP V is 2.40-2.80 volts, go to next step. If PCM PID FTP V is not as specified, replace fuel tank pressure sensor and repeat step to verify repair.
  15. Check Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor With Pressure Applied

    Connect EVAP Tester to fuel filler pipe. Disconnect and plug canister vent hose assembly. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Access PCM PID FTP V. Pressurize system to 3.48 kPa (14 In. H2O). Turn ignition switch to OFF position. If FTP VPID was 4.22-4.90 volts, go to next step. If FTP VPID was not as specified, discontinue pressurizing and return to step  14.
  16. Check EVAP Canister Purge Valve Operation

    Remove plug and reconnect EVAP return tube to intake manifold. Access EVAPPDC and FTP V PIDs. Start engine and allow to idle until PCM PID EVAPPDC duty cycle is 40 percent or more. If PID FTP V is less than 2.6 volts (zero In. H2O), perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If PID FTP V is not as specified, go to next step.
  17. Check For Intake Manifold Vacuum At EVAP Canister Purge Valve

    Disconnect input port vacuum hose and EVAP return tube from EVAP canister purge valve. Connect vacuum gauge to input port vacuum hose and plug open end of EVAP return tube. Start engine and allow to idle. Record vacuum reading. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Move vacuum gauge to EVAP return tube and plug input port vacuum hose. Start engine and allow to idle. Record vacuum reading. If both readings are 14-20 inches Hg (47.25-67.54 kPa), replace EVAP canister valve. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If system passes leak test, perform EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE CYCLE. See DRIVE CYCLE PROCEDURES  under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. If both readings are not as specified, check for blockages in input port vacuum hose or EVAP return tube. heck intake manifold vacuum lines or port for blockage. Repair or replace components as necessary. Perform evaporative emissions system leak test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYSTEM LEAK TEST .
