Test D: Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid

NOTE: Ensure transaxle harness connector is fully seated and in good condition before proceeding.

  1. Electronic Diagnostics Set Up

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Install a 300 PSI (21.1 kg/cm2 ) pressure gauge into line pressure tap. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS under PERFORMANCE TESTS in FORD 4F27E OVERHAUL article for line pressure tap location. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Start and run engine. Using NGS tester, select:
    • DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK
    • PCM
    • ACTIVE COMMAND CODES
    • OUTPUT STATE CONTROL
    • TRANS-BENCH MODE
If vehicle enters TRANS-BENCH MODE, remain in TRANS-BENCH MODE and go to next step. If vehicle does not enter TRANS-BENCH MODE, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE for diagnosis of PCM.
  2. Solenoid Functional Test

Monitor pressure gauges. Using NGS tester, select PCA. Increase engine speed above 1500 RPM. Select value (50, 70, 90, 110, 130 or 150), then press SEND. Select another value, then press send. To exit test, enter XXX, then press SEND. If pressure gauge readings match commanded pressure on NGS tester, clear DTCs and retest system operation. If pressure readings do not match commanded pressure, go to next step.
  3. Check Vehicle Harness & PCM For Short To Power

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect transaxle 9-pin harness connector. Visually inspect all wires and connectors for damage. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector terminals No. 7 (Black/Red wire) and 2 (Green/Black wire). See Figure . If any voltage is present, go to next step. If no voltage is present, go to step  5 .
  4. Check Vehicle Harness For Short To Power

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector terminals No. 7 (Black/Red wire) and 2 (Green/Black wire). If any voltage is present, repair short to power in appropriate wire and retest system operation. If no voltage is present, replace PCM and retest system operation.
  5. Check Electrical Signal

Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector terminals No. 7 (Black/Red wire) and 2 (Green/Black wire). See Figure . Using NGS tester, activate solenoid ON and OFF while monitoring voltage reading. Select a value, press SEND, then repeat with another value. To exit test, select XXX, then press SEND. If voltage changes, go to next step. If voltage does not change, check for open or short in circuit harness or PCM.
  6. Check Internal Transaxle Harness For Short To Ground

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCA solenoid wire connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and transaxle 9-pin internal harness (component side) connector terminals No. 7 and 2. See Figure . If resistances are greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, replace transaxle internal harness and retest system operation.
  7. Check Internal Transaxle Harness For Open

Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between transaxle 9-pin internal harness (component side) connector terminal No. 2 and PCA wire connector terminal No. 2. Measure resistance between transaxle 9-pin internal harness (component side) connector terminal No. 7 and PCA wire connector terminal No. 7. If resistances are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace transaxle internal harness and retest system operation.
  8. Check Solenoid Resistance

Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between PCA solenoid (component side) terminals. Resistance should be 2.4-7.3 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace PCA solenoid and retest system operation.
  9. Check Solenoid For Short To Ground

Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between PCA solenoid body and PCA solenoid (component side) terminals No. 7 and 2. If resistances are greater than 10 k/ohms, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING for diagnosis of pressure concerns. If resistances are less than 10 k/ohms, replace PCA solenoid and retest system operation.
