Test D: Blower Motor Does Not Operate

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Ford Expedition. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Check Fuses No. 23 (30-Amp) & No. 24 (30-Amp)

Turn ignition off. Check power distribution box fuse No. 23 (30-amp) and fuse junction panel fuse No. 24 (30-amp). If fuses are okay, go to step 8)  . If fuses are not okay, replace fuses. Turn ignition to run position (engine off). If fuse No. 23 blows again, go to next step. If fuse No. 24 blows again, go to step 7)  .
  2. Recheck Fuse No. 23 (30-Amp)

Place function selector switch in MAX A/C position. Replace fuse No. 23. Turn ignition to run position (engine off). Check fuse No. 23. If fuse is okay, system is okay. If fuse is blown, go to next step.
  3. Check A/C System For Short

Turn ignition off. Place function selector switch in OFF position. Replace fuse No. 23 (30-amp). Turn ignition to run position (engine off). Check fuse No. 23. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, go to step 5)  .
  4. Check Brown/Orange Wire Circuit For Short

Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor connector. Disconnect function selector switch connector. With an ohmmeter, measure resistance of Brown/Orange wire between function selector switch connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, replace blower motor. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short circuit in Brown/Orange wire. Retest system.
  5. Check Black/Light Green Wire Circuit For Short

Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor relay. Replace fuse No. 23 (30-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, repair short in Black/Light Green wire. Retest system.
  6. Check For Short In Blower Motor Feed Circuit

Disconnect blower motor relay. Disconnect blower motor connector. Measure resistance of Brown/Yellow wire between blower motor relay connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, replace blower motor. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair Brown/Yellow wire and/or Brown/Orange wire. Retest system.
  7. Check White/Purple Wire Circuit For Short

Disconnect function selector switch connector. Measure resistance of White/Purple wire between function selector switch connector and ground. If resistance is greater than 10,000 ohms, replace function selector switch. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short in White/Purple wire. Retest system.
  8. Check Voltage To Blower Motor

Disconnect blower motor connector. Turn ignition to run position (engine off). Measure voltage of Brown/Orange wire between blower motor connector and ground while rotating function selector switch to all positions. If voltage is greater than 10 volts in all function selector switch positions except OFF, go to next step. If voltage is not greater than 10 volts in all function selector switch positions except OFF, go to step 12)  .
  9. Check Orange/Black Wire Circuit

Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor resistor connector. Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between blower motor and blower motor resistor, and between blower motor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between blower motor and blower motor resistor, and greater than 10,000 ohms between blower motor and ground, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms between blower motor and blower motor resistor, and less than 10,000 ohms between blower motor and ground, repair Orange/Black wire. Retest system.
  10. Check Black Wire Circuit For Open

Measure resistance of Black wire between blower motor resistor and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire. Retest system.
  11. Check Blower Motor Switch

Disconnect blower motor switch connector. Place blower motor switch in HI position. Measure resistance between blower motor Light Blue/Orange and Orange/Red wire terminals. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace blower motor. Retest system. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace blower motor switch. Retest system.
  12. Check Voltage To Blower Motor Relay (Switch Side)

Turn ignition off. Disconnect blower motor relay. With a voltmeter, measure voltage of Black/Light Green wire between blower motor relay connector and ground. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open circuit in Black/Light Green wire. Retest system.
  13. Check Voltage To Blower Motor Relay (Coil Side)

Turn ignition to run position (engine off). Measure voltage of Brown/Orange wire between blower motor relay and ground. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 16)  .
  14. Check Black Wire Circuit For Open

Turn ignition off. With an ohmmeter, measure resistance of Black wire between blower motor relay connector and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit in Black wire. Retest system.
  15. Check For Open In Blower Motor Feed Circuit

Disconnect blower motor connector. Measure resistance between blower motor relay connector Brown/Yellow wire terminal and blower motor connector Brown/Orange wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace blower motor relay. Retest system. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Brown/Yellow wire or Brown/Orange wire. Retest system.
  16. Check Voltage To Function Selector Switch

Turn ignition off. Disconnect function selector switch connector. Turn ignition to run position (engine off). With a voltmeter, measure voltage of White/Purple wire between function selector switch connector and ground. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair White/Purple wire. Retest system.
  17. Check Function Selector Switch

With an ohmmeter, measure resistance between function selector switch terminals No. 1 and 2 while rotating switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms in all function selector switch positions except OFF, repair open circuit in Brown/Orange wire. Retest system. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms in all function selector switch positions except OFF, replace function selector switch. Retest system.
