Test E: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Operates Intermittently

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Inspect generator and battery connections. Repair or service connections as necessary. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. With engine running, inspect central junction box fuse No. 29 (5-amp) for looseness by wiggling connection and noting warning indicator operation. If warning indicator flickers, repair loose fuse connection as necessary. If warning indicator does not flicker, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect a fused (15-amp) jumper wire by backprobing between generator terminal "A" and positive battery terminal. Start engine and observe warning indicator. If warning indicator flickers, go to next step. If warning indicator does not flicker, repair loose connection(s) in circuits.
  4. Turn ignition off. Inspect generator terminal "S" to ensure good contact with generator. If generator "S" connector is okay, go to next step. If generator "S" connector is not okay, repair as necessary.
  5. Remove generator from vehicle. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between voltage regulator terminals "A" and "F". If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace generator. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect generator 3-pin and 1-pin connector. Remove voltage regulator from generator. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between each generator slip ring and ground. See Fig 1. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace generator. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, replace voltage regulator.
