Steering Wheel & Air Bag: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 20 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Villager, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, 2001 Ford Windstar, and 2001 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install steering wheel. Tighten pinion shaft to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m). Connect diagnostic simulator to instrument panel harness side of driver air bag module electrical connector. On models with side air bag, remove special tool from driver seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector. Connect driver side air bag module electrical connector.
  2. On all vehicles, remove special tool from driver side safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector. Connect driver side safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. Connect battery ground cable. With remaining special tools still in place, prove out air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute.
  3. On models with side air bag, remove special tool from passenger seat side air bag module body harness electrical connector. Connect passenger side air bag module electrical connector. On all models, remove special tool from passenger side safety belt pretensioner body harness electrical connector. Connect passenger side safety belt pretensioner electrical connector. Remove special tool from instrument panel harness side of passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  4. Connect passenger air bag module electrical connector. Raise glove compartment. Remove special tool from instrument panel harness side of driver air bag module electrical connector. Connect driver air bag module electrical connector. Close steering wheel air bag connector access cover. Connect battery ground cable. Ensure air bag system is functioning properly. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Check restraint system for correct operation.


  1. Position steering wheel while routing wires from air bag sliding contact through steering wheel. Install NEW steering wheel bolt. Connect steering wheel accessory electrical connector. Remove restraint system diagnostic tool from vehicle harness side of air bag sliding contact electrical connector at base of steering column.
  2. Connect air bag sliding contact electrical connector at base of steering column. Connect restraint system diagnostic tool to air bag sliding contact electrical connector at top of steering column. Connect battery ground cable. With restraint system diagnostic tool connected to air bag sliding contact electrical connector at top of steering column, prove out air bag system.   3. Remove restraint system diagnostic tool from air bag sliding contact electrical connector at top of steering column. Position driver air bag module to steering wheel. Install 2 driver air bag module retaining bolts. Install 2 steering wheel back cover plugs.
  4. Position lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement, and install 2 bolts. Install lower steering column opening finish panel. Position hood release handle, and instal screws. Connect battery ground cable. With restraint system diagnostic tool removed, prove out air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
