Removal & Installation (Econoline)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 20 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Villager, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, 2001 Ford Windstar, and 2001 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Wait one minute to deplete air bag backup power supply. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG . Remove driver side air bag module.
  2. Remove steering column lower trim moldings. Remove steering column release lever by unscrewing it from steering column. Rotate ignition lock cylinder to RUN position. Using 1/8" drift, press retaining pin of lock cylinder through access hole in lower steering column shroud, and remove ignition switch lock cylinder.
  3. Remove clockspring. Remove 4 retaining screws from lower steering column shroud, and remove upper shroud from column. On all models except commercial chassis, unsnap lower instrument panel steering column cover, and remove steering column support.
  4. Disconnect PRND21 cable from steering actuator housing by removing one screw. Disconnect PRND21 cable loop from shift tube hook.
  5. Remove 2 retaining screws and 2 electrical connectors from switch. Remove multi-function switch from steering column. Remove pinch bolt from steering column universal joint. Disconnect shift cable from selector lever pivot arm.
  6. Remove shift cable from steering column lower mounting bracket by pushing tab on cable in and sliding cable off bracket. Disconnect ignition switch. Lower steering column bend bracket, and disconnect plastic electrical connectors. While supporting steering column, remove 4 retaining nuts. Remove steering column from vehicle.
  7. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
