Test O: Air Bag Warning Indicator Light Inoperative Or Always On

WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any air bag restraint system components. Disconnect battery and, if equipped, auxiliary power supplies. Wait one minute for backup power supply energy to deplete.
NOTE: Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS) module may also be referred to as air bag diagnostic module, air bag diagnostic monitor or Restraints Control Module (RCM).
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position while observing air bag light prove out. If air bag light prove out is normal, system is okay. If air bag light stays on, go to next step. If air bag light does not come on during prove out, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor connector C223. Disconnect Black/Orange wire at ground behind right kick panel. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C250a terminal No. 6 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. See Figure. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Black/Yellow wire. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, problem is in air bag restraint system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
  3. Check Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse No. 29 (5-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. Test system operation. If fuse fails again, repair White/Yellow wire short to ground.
  4. Verify instrument cluster connectors are fully seated. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If instrument cluster connectors are fully seated, go to next step. If instrument cluster connectors are not fully seated, properly seat connectors.
  5. Check air bag light bulb continuity. If bulb is okay, go to next step. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C250a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 7 (White/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C250a. See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in White/Yellow wire and retest.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect battery ground cable and wait one minute. Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor connector C223. Disconnect Black/Orange wire at ground behind right kick panel. Measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between terminal No. 7 at air bag diagnostic monitor harness connector C223 and terminal No. 6 at instrument cluster harness connector C250a. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire.
  8. Reconnect instrument cluster connector C250a. Reconnect Black/Orange wire to ground behind right kick panel. Reconnect battery ground cable. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 7 (Black/Yellow wire) at air bag diagnostic monitor harness connector C223. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If air bag light illuminates, replace air bag diagnostic monitor. See AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If air bag light does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
