Test C: Fuel Gauge Reads Incorrectly
- Test fuel gauge. See FUEL GAUGE TEST under COMPONENT TESTS. If fuel gauge functions correctly, go to next step. If fuel gauge does not function correctly, go to step 4.
- Visually inspect fuel tank for any damage or deformation. If fuel tank is okay, go to next step. If fuel tank is not okay, replace fuel tank.
- Visually inspect fuel pump module, wiring, float and float rod for damage or obstruction. If fuel pump module and wiring is okay, replace fuel gauge sending unit.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect fuel pump/sending unit harness connector C441 (C442 on California models). Measure resistance between fuel level sensor ground and Black/Orange wire terminal at fuel pump/sending unit connector C441 or C442. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Orange wire and retest.
- Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Measure resistance between terminal No. 10 (Yellow/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C250b and Yellow/White wire terminal at fuel pump/sending unit harness connector C441 or C442. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 10 (Yellow/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C250b. If resistance is 5 ohms or less between instrument cluster and fuel pump/sending unit and more than 10 k/ohms between instrument cluster and ground, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and fuel pump/sending unit and less than 10 k/ohms between instrument cluster and ground, repair circuit and retest.
