Hub & Bearing: Installation

  1. Using a brass drift and hammer. Install NEW bearing race using Bearing Race Replacer (205-278). DO NOT chip or dent race. Ensure new race is fully seated in hub.
  2. Pack bearings with lithium-base grease. Install NEW seal. Carefully install hub onto axle spindle to avoid damaging seal lip and spindle threads. Install outer bearing and adjusting nut.
  3. Ensure nut tab aligns with keyway in axle. Using Hub Locknut Socket (205-282), tighten bearing adjusting nut in 2 steps. See REAR HUB BEARING ADJUSTING SPECIFICATIONS  table. Hub will ratchet as torque is applied.
  4. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW axle-to-hub "O" ring, lock washers and bolts. Tighten lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

(1) Back off hub nut 90 degrees, retighten to torque specification. Ensure final bearing adjustment has zero end play and maximum rotating torque is 20 INCH lbs. (2.3 Nm).


  1. Position hub in vise with wheel studs pointing upward. Place outer bearing race in hub bore. Position Handle (205-153) and Rear Axle Bearing Replacer (205-099), on outer bearing race. Using a hammer, drive outer bearing race into hub bore until fully seated.
  2. Reposition hub assembly in vise so wheel studs are pointing downward. Position inner bearing race in hub bore and place Handle (205-153) with Rear Axle Bearing Replacer (205-100) on bearing cup. Using a hammer, drive inner bearing cup into hub bore until fully seated.
  3. Apply wheel bearing grease to bearings and pack each bearing. Apply grease to thrust surface of bearings. Position inner bearing in inner bearing race. Position oil slinger on greased bearing with tangs facing bearing. Position hub seal in hub bore and place Handle (205-153) with Hub Seal Replacer (205-422) on hub seal. Using a hammer, drive hub seal into position so seal flange bottoms out in hub.
  4. Inspect spindle at seal surface and inner shoulder. Using No. 600 or finer crocus cloth, remove any scratches, gouging or galling if necessary. Clean spindle and coat with axle lubricant. Fill hub cavity with 1 ounce (30 ml) of SAE 75W-140 High Performance Rear Axle Lubricant or equivalent. Coat spindle and hub seal with rear axle lubricant. Install rear hub and outer bearing onto spindle.
  5. Install hub nut on spindle. Turn clockwise for right-hand thread or counterclockwise for left-hand thread. Position Axle Locknut Socket (205-448) on hub nut. Tighten hub nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 N.m), rotating rear hub occasionally while tightening. On new bearings, ratchet back five teeth or notches (1/8 turn) on hub nut. Five notches must be felt during this operation. On used bearings, ratchet back seven teeth or notches (1/6 turn) on hub nut. Seven notches MUST be felt during this operation.
  6. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW axle-to-hub "O" ring, lock washers and bolts. Tighten lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
