Differential Assembly (Ford 10.50"): Disassembly
- Raise and support vehicle. Drain lubricant and remove housing cover. Mount dial indicator and measure and record ring gear runout. See Fig 1. Runout must not exceed .004" (.10 mm).
- Remove axle shafts. See AXLE SHAFT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place alignment marks on drive shaft, yoke and companion flange for reassembly reference.
- Remove drive shaft. Install plug in transmission extension housing to prevent oil leakage. Mark differential bearing caps for reassembly reference and note arrow position. Remove bearing caps. Using a pry bar and wooden block, pry out differential case.
- Mark differential case and ring gear for reassembly reference. Remove and discard ring gear mounting bolts. Press or tap off ring gear. Remove exciter ring from differential case (if necessary). If exciter ring is removed from differential case, a NEW exciter ring must be installed.
- Install differential case (without ring gear) into axle housing. Install bearing caps and bolts. Rotate differential case and ensure bearings are properly seated. Using a dial indicator, measure differential case runout. If runout is within specifications, install new ring gear and pinion. If runout exceeds specification, ring gear is true. Inspect differential case and differential bearings for damage. If bearings are not damaged, replace differential case and differential bearings. Remove differential case from axle housing
- Remove pinion flange. See PINION FLANGE & SEAL under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in this article.
- Position Pinion Thread Protector (205-229) on pinion shaft. Using a soft faced hammer, drive pinion out of front bearing cone and remove it through rear of axle housing. Remove collapsible spacer and discard. Using a bearing splitter and press, remove pinion bearing from pinion shaft. Position appropriate bearing/seal remover on outer pinion bearing race. Using a hammer, drive race from axle housing. Position appropriate bearing/seal remover on inner pinion bearing race. Using a hammer, drive race from axle housing.
- Position differential case on a suitable bench and position carrier bearing removal tools on differential case. See Fig 2. Place sleeve over bearing collets. Using two wrenches, remove differential bearing. See Fig 3. Repeat procedure for other differential bearing.

- On one-piece differential case assembly, remove differential pinion shaft lock bolt and remove differential pinion shaft. Rotate and remove pinion gears and pinion thrust washers, Remove differential side gears and side gear thrust washers. On two-piece differential case assembly, place index marks on both side of differential case halves for installation reference. Remove differential case bolts and separate halves. Remove pinion shaft and pinion gears. Remove left side gear and side gear thrust washers.
NOTE:
Bearing races and caps must be installed in original positions.
NOTE:
Tab on exciter ring must be aligned with slot in differential case.
NOTE:
DO NOT remove pinion bearing races unless damaged. If races are replaced, bearings must also be replaced.
