Removal & Installation (Econoline E350)

  1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disable air bag. See DISABLING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Remove two back cover plugs from steering wheel. Remove 2 screws and disconnect horn electrical connector. Disconnect air bag sliding contact electrical connector and remove air bag module. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG .
  3. Remove steering wheel column lower trim mouldings. See Fig 1. On all models except Commercial Chassis, grasp bottom of instrument panel steering column cover and pull to disengage bottom from its retained position, then grasp the top of instrument panel steering column cover and pull to disengage from its retained position. On Commercial Chassis, remove steering column tube lower trim.

  4. Remove steering column release lever by unscrewing it from steering column. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder. See IGNITION SWITCH LOCK CYLINDER . Remove clockspring. Remove four screws from lower steering column shroud. Remove lower and upper shroud from steering column. On all models except Commercial Chassis, unsnap lower instrument panel steering column cover and remove six knee brace retaining bolts.
  5. On all models except Commercial Chassis, remove 2 bolts from instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement. On Commercial Chassis, remove four retaining nuts from steering column support. Remove screw and disconnect PRND21 cable from steering actuator housing. See Fig 2. Disconnect PRND21 cable loop from shift tube hook.

  6. Remove 2 screws and electrical connectors from multifunction switch and remove switch from steering column. Remove pinch bolt from steering column universal joint. Disconnect shift cable from selector lever pivot arm. Remove shift cable from steering column lower mounting bracket by pushing tab on cable in and sliding cable off bracket.
  7. Disconnect ignition switch. Lower steering column bend bracket and disconnect plastic electrical connectors. Support steering column and remove four retaining nuts. Remove steering column.
  8. To install steering column, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
