Diagnostic Aids
Perform this test when directed by QUICK TEST. This test is intended to diagnose:
- Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Switch
- Wiring Harness Circuits (CPP & SIG RTN)
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
- 1) DTC P0704: Check CPP Parameter Identification (PID)
Using scan tool, select CPP PID from PID/DATA monitor menu. With clutch pedal released, observe CPP PID reading. If CPP PID reading indicates ON only, go to next step. If CPP PID reading does not indicate ON only, go to step 4). - 2) Check CPP Switch
Turn ignition on. Disconnect CPP switch. If CPP PID reading switches to OFF, replace CPP switch. Reconnect all connectors, clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST . If CPP PID reading does not switch to OFF, go to next step. - 3) Check For Short To Power
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Tan/Light Blue wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. See Fig 1. If battery voltage is present, locate and repair short to power in Tan/Light Blue wire. If battery voltage is not present, inspect PCM 104-pin connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Reconnect all connectors and go to step 11). - 4) Check CPP PID
Depress clutch pedal to floor. Check CPP PID reading. If CPP PID reading indicates ON only, go to next step. If CPP PID reading does not indicate ON only, fault may be intermittent. Go to step 12). - 5) Check Fuse No. 19
Remove and inspect fuse No. 19 from instrument panel fuse block. If fuse is blown, go to next step. If fuse is okay, go to step 8). - 6) Check For Short To Ground
Disconnect CPP switch connected. Measure resistance between ground and Red/Yellow wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Red/Yellow wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. - 7) Check For Short To Ground
Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector. Measure resistance between ground and Tan/Light Blue wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, locate and repair short to ground in Tan/Light Blue wire. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, inspect terminal No. 29 at PCM connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary and go to step 11. - 8) Check For Open Circuit
Ensure ignition is off and CPP switch is disconnected. Measure resistance of Red/Yellow wire between output side of No. 19 fuse holder and CPP switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open circuit in Red/Yellow wire. - 9) Check CPP Switch
Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire and Red/Yellow wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. Check CPP PID reading. If CPP PID reading indicates ON, replace CPP switch. If CPP PID reading indicates OFF, go to next step. - 10) Check Circuit No. 306
Disconnect jumper wire. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between Tan/Light Blue wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector and test pin No. 29 at breakout box. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, reconnect all connectors and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open circuit in Tan/Light Blue wire. - 11) Confirm PCM Fault
Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select CPP PID from PID/DATA monitor menu. While observing CPP PID reading, depress and release clutch pedal. If CPP PID switches from ON to OFF, no problem is indicated at this time. If CPP PID does not switch from ON to OFF, replace PCM. Recheck CPP PID. - 12) Check For Intermittent
Ensure CPP switch is disconnected. Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire and Red/Yellow wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. Using scan tool, select CPP PID from PID/DATA monitor menu. CPP PID should indicate ON. While observing CPP PID, wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness working toward PCM. If fault is indicated (CPP PID switches to OFF), isolate fault and repair as necessary. If no fault is indicated, go to next step. - 13) Check For Intermittent Short To Power
Ensure CPP switch is disconnected. Remove fuse No. 19 from instrument panel fuse block. Turn ignition on. Connect a jumper wire between Tan/Light Blue wire and Red/Yellow wire at CPP switch wiring harness connector. Using scan tool, select CPP PID from PID/DATA monitor menu. CPP PID reading should indicate OFF. While observing CPP PID, wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness working toward PCM. If fault is indicated (CPP PID switches to ON), isolate fault and repair as necessary. If no fault is indicated, no problem is indicated at this time.
