Test G: Temperature Gauge Reads Incorrectly
NOTE:
Ensure engine coolant is at proper level and that coolant temperature sender connector is securely attached.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect coolant temperature sender connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If temperature gauge reads in cold band, go to step 3. If gauge does not read in cold band, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and Red/White wire at harness side of coolant temperature sender terminal. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to step 4. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Red/White wire.
- Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between both coolant temperature sender connector terminals. If temperature gauge does not read in hot band, go to next step. If temperature gauge reads in hot band, remove jumper wire. Reconnect coolant temperature sender. Start vehicle and allow engine to reach operating temperature. If gauge is not in normal range, replace coolant temperature sender.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Yellow/Red wire) at coolant temperature sender harness connector C150. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Red wire.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C250b. See Figure. Measure resistance between terminal No. 9 (Red/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C250b and terminal No. 1 (Red/White wire) at coolant temperature sensor harness connector C150. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red/White wire.
