Removal (Villager)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 20 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Villager, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, 2001 Ford Windstar, and 2001 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Wait 3 minutes to deplete air bag back-up power supply.
  2. Remove driver air bag module. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG . If contact assembly is to be reused, put tape across contact assembly to prevent rotation of contact assembly. See Figure. If clockspring is rotated, it could be damaged internally.
  3. Remove lower steering column shroud. Remove 4 pushpins and CD changer cover (if equipped) or console compartment door. Remove ashtray and cup holder assembly. Remove 2 center instrument panel retaining screws. Remove center instrument finish panel.
  4. Pull out headlight switch with finish panel, releasing retaining clips. Disconnect headlight switch, and remove it. Remove 3 screws, and pull out instrument cluster finish panel, but do not remove it. Remove fuse panel cover. Remove lower steering column opening finish panel retaining screw. Remove 2 pushpins and 1 screw for lower steering column opening finish panel.
  5. Remove 2 screws, disconnect cigarette lighter and speed control switch, and remove lower steering column opening finish panel. Remove 4 screws, and pull out lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement. Disconnect 2 electrical connectors, and remove pushpins. Open SIR harness retainer and remove wire harness. Remove 3 screws and air bag sliding contact assembly.
