Manual Locking Hubs (Excursion & Super Duty): Installation

NOTE: Any time the wheel hub is removed, a NEW "O" ring seal kit must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of 4WD operations.
  1. Install a NEW "O" ring. See Figure .
  2. Position the hub in a soft-jawed vise and install 2 nuts on the studs and use the outer nut to install the studs. See Figure .
  3. On vehicles equipped with ABS, position the ABS sensor and install the bolt. See Figure . Tighten ABS sensor bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. On all vehicles, position the brake disc shield. See Figure .
    5. NOTE: Apply a coat of Ford High Temperature 4X4 Front Axle and Wheel Bearing Grease (E8TZ-19590-A) to the "O" ring area of the wheel hub and bearing before installing the hub and bearing.
  5. Install the wheel hub and bearing. Position the wheel hub and bearing. Install the 4 wheel hub lock nuts and tighten to specification. See Figure . See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. On vehicles equipped with ABS, connect the ABS sensor harness. Position the ABS sensor harness and install the routing clips. See Figure . Connect the ABS sensor harness connector.
    7. CAUTION: The non-metallic thrust washer must be installed between the 2 metal thrust washers. Failure to do so will cause severe wear to the non-metallic thrust washer, allowing the axle shaft to travel further in and out during torque thrust causing damage to the wheel hub and bearing, the axle shaft end seal and the axle shaft.
  7. On all vehicles, position the 3 thrust washers onto the axle shaft and install the axle shaft snap ring. See Figure .
    8. NOTE: Any time the hub lock is removed, a NEW "O" ring seal must be installed. Failure to do so can cause a vacuum leak and loss of 4WD functions.
  8. Install a NEW hub lock "O" ring.
  9. Position the hub lock and install the retainer ring. See Figure .
  10. Install the rotor and brake caliper. See DISC & DRUM - TRUCKS - EXCEPT VILLAGER article in BRAKES.
  11. Perform the hublock vacuum system leak test. See HUBLOCK VACUUM SYSTEM LEAK TEST  under SYSTEM TEST.
