Removal & Installation (Expedition & Navigator)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 20 other vehicles, including the 2001 Mercury Villager, 2001 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, 2001 Ford Windstar, and 2001 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disconnect both battery cables. Wait one minute to deplete air bag backup power supply. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & AIR BAG . Remove driver side air bag module.
  2. On 2000 models, move shift lever to low (1) position. Remove steering column opening cover. Remove instrument panel fuse door. Remove screws and position hood latch release handle and parking brake release handle aside. Remove instrument panel floor duct panel. Remove bolts and instrument panel column cover.
  3. On 2001 models, remove clockspring. On all models, remove instrument panel opening cover. Remove bolt, and disconnect ignition switch electrical connector. Remove transmission range indicator from steering column.
  4. Remove steering column shaft pinch bolt. Slide intermediate shaft off at steering column. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove steering column nuts, and lower steering column. Disconnect wiring at parking brake release switch, if equipped.
  5. Disconnect shift cable from steering column shift tube lever. Disconnect shift cable from steering column instrument panel bracket.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
