Test G: Speedometer Reading Inaccurate
- Using New Generation Star (NGS), drive vehicle at a steady speed until Powertrain Control Module (PCM) VSS PID indicates 30 MPH (48 km/h). If speedometer indication is 28-35 MPH (45-57 km/h), go to next step. If speedometer indication is not 28-35 MPH (45-57 km/h), see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE to diagnose VSS circuit.
- Drive vehicle at a steady speed until VSS PID indicates 60 MPH (97 km/h). If speedometer indication is 58-62 MPH (94-100 km/h), speedometer is okay at this time. Go to next step. If speedometer indication is not 58-62 MPH (94-100 km/h), see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- On diesel models, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C224 and VSS harness connector C108. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (Gray/Black wire) at instrument cluster connector. Measure resistance in Gray/Black wire between terminal No. 7 at instrument cluster connector and terminal No. 2 at VSS harness connector. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster, and 5 ohms or less between instrument cluster and VSS, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Gray/Black wire between instrument cluster and VSS harness connector.
- On other than diesel, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C224 and PCM harness connector C154. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (Gray/Black wire) at instrument cluster connector. Measure resistance in Gray/Black wire between terminal No. 7 at instrument cluster connector and terminal No. 68 (terminal No. 46 on 6.8L engine) at PCM harness connector C154. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, between ground and instrument cluster, and 5 ohms or less between instrument cluster and PCM, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Gray/Black wire between instrument cluster and PCM.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (Red/White wire) at instrument cluster connector C224. If battery voltage exists, replace instrument cluster and retest system. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Red/White wire between instrument cluster harness connector C224 and in line connector C229 (located at left rear of engine compartment on firewall). From in line connector C229, wire changes color to a Yellow wire and runs to output of fuse No. 4 (10-amp) at battery junction box.
