Test D: Temperature Gauge Inaccurate
- Start and run engine until it reaches operating temperature. If temperature gauge indicates normal operating temperature, check for an intermittent problem. If temperature gauge reads high, go to next step. If temperature gauge reads low, go to step 4) .
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect temperature sending unit connector C137 or C1004 (diesel). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If temperature gauge reads high, go to next step. If temperature gauge does not read high, replace temperature sending unit and recheck gauge operation.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C224. See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 9 (Red/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C224. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Red/White wire between instrument cluster and temperature sending unit.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect temperature sending unit harness connector C137 or C1004 (diesel). Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between temperature sending unit harness connector terminals. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If temperature gauge does not indicate HOT, go to next step. If temperature gauge indicates HOT, replace coolant temperature sending unit. Retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and temperature sending unit harness connector (Yellow/Red wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/Red wire between temperature sending unit and ground G203. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
- Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C224. Measure resistance of Red/White wire between terminal No. 9 at instrument cluster harness connector C224 and temperature sending unit harness connector. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red/White wire between instrument cluster and engine coolant temperature sensor (diesel) or coolant temperature sending unit (other than diesel). Check gauge operation.
