Test Ai: Ecu Circuit Failure (DTC B1342)

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) module harness connector C1012. Inspect harness and module connectors for loose, damaged or corroded connections. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair or replace as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Install 60-pin Breakout Box (014-00322) following manufacturer's instructions. Measure voltage between breakout box pins No. 37 or 57 (Red wires) and pins No. 40 or 60 (Black wires). If battery voltage exists, go to step  4. If battery voltage does is not present, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and breakout pins No. 40 or 60. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair open in Red wires between terminal No. 87 at PCM power relay, splice S180 (Located at left rear of engine compartment, above master cylinder) and branches to terminals No. 37 and 57 at NGV module harness connector C1012. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair appropriate Black wire between terminal No. 1 at NGV timer harness connector C1013, splice S188 (located in clean air tube, on intake air temperature sensor) and branches to terminals No. 40 and 60 at NGV module harness connector C1012.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect NGV module connector C1012 to 60-pin breakout box. Measure resistance between breakout box pins No. 40 or 60 and pin No. 16. If resistance reading is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance reading is more than 5 ohms, replace NGV module. See NATURAL GAS VEHICLE (NGV) MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Measure resistance between terminal No. 5 (Black/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C224 and breakout box pin No. 16. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire between terminal No. 5 at instrument cluster harness connector C224, splice S268 (located at left rear of engine compartment on firewall) and ground G203 (located at upper left side of instrument panel).
  6. Measure resistance between terminal No. 7 (Yellow/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C224 and breakout box pin No. 38. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow/White wire.
  7. Measure voltage between breakout box pin No. 38 and pins No. 40 or 60. If voltage is .5 volt or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than .5 volt, repair short to voltage in Yellow/White wire between terminal No. 38 at NGV harness connector C1012, in-line splice C229 (located at left rear of engine compartment on firewall) and terminal No. 10 at instrument cluster harness connector C224.
  8. Disconnect NGV module harness connector C1012 from 60-pin breakout box. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (Yellow/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C224. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow/White wire between terminal No. 38 at NGV harness connector C1012, in-line splice C229 (located at left rear of engine compartment on firewall) and terminal No. 7 at instrument cluster harness connector C224.
  9. Connect Instrument Gauge Tester (014-R1063) leads to breakout box pins No. 38 and 60. Adjust tester to 22 ohms (15 ohms for 2000 models). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wait 60 seconds. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge indicates empty, go to step  11. Measure voltage at terminal No. 1 (Yellow/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C224. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Yellow/White wire between NGV module, in-line splice C229 (located at left rear of engine compartment on firewall) and instrument cluster.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Tap lightly on instrument cluster. Wait 60 seconds. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, go to next step. If fuel gauge indicates empty, replace fuel gauge.
  11. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Adjust tester to 145 ohms (160 ohms for 2000 models). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wait 60 seconds. If fuel gauge indicates full, system is okay at this time. If fuel gauge does not indicate full, replace fuel gauge.
