Test Fa: Air Conditioning: Testing

- 1) KOER DTC P1464: Perform KOER Cylinder Contribution Self-Test
DTC P1464 indicates A/C was on during KOER CYLINDER CONTRIBUTION SELF-TEST. Clear DTCs. Turn A/C heater control switch off. Perform KOER CYLINDER CONTRIBUTION SELF-TEST under QUICK TEST. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC P1464 is present, go to next step. If DTC P1464 is not present, fault may be intermittent. Go to step 9). - 2) Check A/C Clutch PWR Circuit For Short To Voltage
Turn ignition on. Turn A/C heater control switch off. Disconnect A/C clutch connector. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and Black/Yellow wire (Econoline and F650-750) or Gray/White wire (Excursion and F250-550) at A/C clutch harness connector. See Figure-Figure . If battery voltage is not present, go to step 8). If battery voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Black/Yellow wire (Econoline and F650-750), or go to next step (Excursion and F250-550). - 3) Check A/C Pressure Switch Circuit For Short To Voltage
Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C refrigerant containment switch. Refrigerant containment switch is located on right front side of engine compartment, near radiator. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and refrigerant containment switch harness connector terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure or Figure . If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to voltage in A/C switch circuit or climate mode switch. If vehicle is equipped with EATC, see appropriate symptom under SYMPTOM TESTS in appropriate AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING to diagnose concern with EATC module. Clear DTCs and retest. - 4) Check For Short In ACCS Circuit To PCM
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 41 at breakout box. If battery voltage exists, repair Tan/Light Green wire between PCM and refrigerant containment switch for short to voltage. Clear DTCs and retest. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. - 5) Check A/C Clutch Relay Circuit
Remove A/C clutch relay located in relay block under hood. Ensure A/C compressor clutch is disconnected. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and Gray/White wire at A/C clutch compressor connector. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Gray/White wire. Clear DTCs and retest. - 6) Check PCM A/C Relay Control Circuit
Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between negative battery terminal and A/C clutch relay cavity No. 1 in relay block. See Figure or Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in A/C clutch relay control circuit (Pink/Yellow wire) between A/C clutch relay and PCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. - 7) Check A/C Relay
Connect PCM to breakout box. Install A/C clutch relay. Turn ignition on. Perform KOER self-test where DTC was set. If DTC P1464 is still present, check A/C clutch relay for correct operation. Replace relay as necessary. If A/C clutch relay is okay, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If DTC P1464 is not present, no concern is indicated at this time. Testing is complete. - 8) Check For Short To Voltage At Breakout Box Test Pin No. 41
Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Ensure A/C heater control switch is off. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 41 at breakout box. If battery voltage is present, locate and repair short to voltage in Black/Yellow wire (Econoline and F650-750) or Tan/Light Green wire (Excursion and F250-550). If battery voltage is not present, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. - 9) Check For Intermittent Short To Voltage
Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 41 at breakout box. Wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness starting at A/C high pressure switch and working toward PCM. If fault is indicated (voltage present), isolate fault and repair short to voltage. Clear DTCs and retest. If no fault is found, no concern is indicated at this time. Testing is complete. Clear DTCs and retest.
